While Peoria VW Dealer may have the ability to advertise their VW Beetle with cute flower-power marketing, the Kia Soul is targeting the youth market hard with their hamster commercials. While the stateside release of the Fiesta may help Denver Ford dealers, they are going to need some kind of marketing ploy to compete. The Nissan Altima Inventory shouldn’t be affected by Kia’s youth campaigns, but the sales of their comparable Versa could face some challenges.
Their recognizable commercial just earned “Automotive Ad of the Year” from Nielsen. The unique commercial featuring an urban hip-hop hamster city setting leaves a lasting, positive impression with viewers. That recollection goes hand-in-hand with the futuristic stylish exterior of the Kia Soul. The commercial also highlights the vehicle’s sound system with light-up speakers that correspond to the beats of the music. The Korean automaker can thank marketing genius David & Goliath, who are known for their past work with Outback Steakhouse and Universal Orlando.
Their latest hamster commercial features the new Soul being driven and occupied by hamsters cruising down the urban hamster city while listening to “This or That” from The Black Sheep. The hamsters in the flashy red Soul cleverly point to “this” and compare it to “that,” other hamsters driving cardboard boxes or toasters on wheels. The choice is more than clear. The young car buyers across America want something trendy, something that stands out, something affordable, and something that is reliable. Kia does offer their 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, and report that with routine maintenance, many buyers never have to call upon that warranty. While a bold commercial theme can be a risky business decision, the Kia Soul hamsters have gotten nothing but positive feedback and rave reviews. The Kia Soul has also gotten positive reviews, but has been criticized for the specialized trim names: base, +, !, and Sport. One might guess that those critics aren’t members of the Generation Y target-market!
